The work
Having carried out a number of restoration projects on the building, the association is now embarking on a new project: rebuilding a bread oven at Fort Wagner, identical to the models found in the forts of Metz's second fortified belt!
This conception and know-how are almost non-existent in "old France".
The association's volunteers recovered the elements of a bread oven from another fort where it was in danger of being damaged. Reconstruction of the oven (5m x 3m and 2.90 m high) at Fort Wagner will involve 3 successive phases of construction, spaced out by 3 phases of consolidation and drying.
The three stages are as follows:
-1 preparation of materials, layout and assembly from the base to the hearth.
-2 the baking chamber assembly with its heating tubes
And its transfer cart. Assembling the fireplace.
-3 installation of circuits, ventilation, smoke extraction and installation of doors and decorative elements.
This year, the project consists of building the identical base up to the hearth.
The reuse of materials from the dismantled kiln is essential; ordinary and refractory bricks; sand and clay...
The oven is a succession of single or double brick walls. The space between is filled with sand or clay.
Supervision is provided by a team of members of the Association pour la Découverte de la Fortification Messine and a mason compagnon du devoir.
