The mission of thePari(s) Affresco association and fresco painters' collective is to raise awareness and provide training inbuon fresco, the art of painting on fresh plaster made from air lime.Pari(s) Affresco contributes to heritage enhancement, environmental protection, the dissemination of unique know-how and the creation of fresco paintings.
Pari(s) Affresco, because Paris was the birthplace of the fresco revival in the early 20th century, and where the members of the association's collective were trained inbuon fresco. It's also a daring challenge: to create original murals today, using an age-old, rare and environmentally-friendly technique.
Pari(s) Affresco was founded by artist Isabelle Bonzom, painter and fresco artist, art historian and author of the book"La fresque, art et technique" (Eyrolles). ThePari(s) Affresco collective, with some twenty members, offers training in fresco and lime plaster techniques, as well as fresco creations for private and public spaces. With a wide range of skills, its members are painters, architects, designers, decorators, mosaicists, teachers, icon painters and restorers. All approachbuon fresco with respect for its ancestral rules, in a spirit of experimentation, eager to share their knowledge and experience.
Historical background: First used in ancient Pompeii, in the Middle Ages in churches and castles throughout Europe, from Byzantium to Russia, then in the Renaissance by Giotto and Michelangelo, fresco was gradually abandoned after the 16th century.in the Renaissance by Giotto and Michelangelo, frescoes were gradually abandoned after the 16th century. In the early years of the 20th century, fresco was reinvented in Paris by Paul Baudoüin, who set the standard for a fresco technique based on transparencies. The reinvigorated buon fresco then spread to other countries and continents, thanks to artists who had stayed in Paris, such as Diego Rivera.
The most ecological and sustainable pictorial and mural technique: buon fresco is composed of natural materials: sand, air lime, pigments (earth and minerals). Microporous, lime plaster lets the substrate "breathe" and creates a balance between the interior and exterior of the building. Fresco plaster helps to improve the soundproofing and thermal insulation of homes, and enhances the quality of the living environment. Weather-resistant,buon fresco can be applied outdoors.
The association organizes artistic, educational and cultural events and productions: conferences, courses, site visits, heritage fairs, educational publications and fresco creations.
To finance its activities,Pari(s) Affresco is authorized to receive support from donors (private donations or corporate sponsorship). Its members have the satisfaction of supporting the only fresco association in the Île de France region, and the only fresco collective in France.
Pari(s) Affresco will join Union Rempart in December 2021. Pari(s) Affresco's work and ethics have attracted the attention of Union Rempart's regional and national commissions. Pari(s) Affresco's mission to preserve and pass on rare and unique artistic know-how has been hailed as a way of safeguarding the "heritage of the hand".
Expertise in fresco painting
Pari(s) Affresco's mission is to develop the study of buon fresco, the art of painting on fresh plaster composed of air lime. The founder of our association, Isabelle Bonzom, artist, muralist, fresco artist and art historian, author of the reference book "La fresque, art et technique" (Eyrolles), has been an expert in the art of buon fresco for thirty years.
She has been teaching fresco since 1994, first at the Centre International d'Art Mural de Saint-Savin, then for the CMA de la Ville de Paris, training hundreds of people in the technique. She was a fresco teacher at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et Métiers d'Art (Olivier de Serres). She also lectures on the history, technique and art of buon fresco.
She shares her thoughts on this art form and writes regularly about the fresco, notably for the Palais de la Porte Dorée. In Los Angeles, she was asked to communicate the fruit of her research and reflection on Goya's fresco: "Goya Affresco" (on Vimeo).
Isabelle Bonzom appraises sites with frescoed murals.
Pari(s) Affresco organizes fresco workshops and training courses.
They take several forms and are aimed at different audiences: children, teenagers, adults, amateurs and professionals.
1- Conferences and videoconferences on frescoes, their history, geography, technique, iconography and aesthetics.
2- Visits to frescoed sites: analysis of the links between history, technique, the artist's approach and iconography (study of the meaning of the painted image) and its relationship with architecture.
3- Demonstrations of the fresco technique by members of the collective at cultural events (arts and crafts fairs, heritage fairs, etc.).
4- Introduction to fresco. Discovery of fresco from 4 to 7 hours: create a fresco on a small independent support, and leave with your own fresco. This initiation is aimed at three audiences: children, teenagers and adults.
