Culture, history and archaeology of the castellany of Miremont (CHAM)

Organizers / Managers

Presentation

The association was created in 2005 with the aim of promoting the heritage of Mauzens-et-Miremont, whether rural (calvaries, buildings) or monuments such as the château or the church. Our aim is to involve the local population in safeguarding this heritage through discovery and enhancement activities (notably at the Château de Miremont). This takes the form of members' days, during which members of the association volunteer to clear and restore masonry. We also get together for social events (annual barbecues, general meetings, plant discovery days, local mills, etc.).

The CHAM is also involved in Heritage Days, when it opens the château to visitors with entertainment provided by local troupes (renaissance songs, archery, sword fights, etc.).

Since 2010, the association has been organizing volunteer workcamps to save one of Miremont's village gates and the entrance gate to the château courtyard. The association is determined to continue this effort, both on members' days and through volunteer workcamps, in order to bring the Château de Miremont back to life.

CHAM (Culture, Histoire et Archéologie de la châtellenie de Miremont), a member of the REMPART association, has been committed since 2011 to consolidating the last remaining village gate at Miremont, completed in 2016. In parallel with the village gate, in 2014 we began the project of restoring the ashlar facing of the section of the enclosure located at the level of the destroyed entrance châtelet against the restored gate. In addition, the western corner of the entrance châtelet was cleared in 2019: its consolidation and reparementing are to be carried out.

CHAM has put this restoration on hold for the 2022 worksite, in favor of a more urgent area. This area is part of the village wall that collapsed in winter 2021, in connection with the already restored village gate.

Clearing backfill in the northern ditch at the foot of the gatehouse

The intervention zone is located to the north of the château, on the ditch side. This area consists of a large scree cone with an east-west dip. The facing of the entrance châtelet has been almost entirely torn away on the visible side, leaving few visible elements. The wall's internal infill is therefore visible, showing a variety of blocking reworked with reused elements.

By taking part in the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine, the Journées du Patrimoine de Pays, and organizing local heritage discovery walks every year, our association opens the doors, minds and imaginations to the treasures of the châtellenie de Miremont: Fauna, flora, landscapes, crafts, buildings etcetera
