Volunteer workcamp coordinator course on historic monuments

Organised by "REMPART Grand-East"

Accessible from age 18

Would you like to become a volunteer workcamp leader? Come and take part in our volunteer workcamp leader course at the former Morimond Abbey, in an idyllic setting between meadows, lakes and forests!

Morimond Abbey

Founded in 1115, Morimond Abbey is the fourth daughter abbey of Cîteaux. Over the course of its history, it has been very prolific, with a network of some 200 daughter abbeys throughout Europe! This imposing abbey site was severely damaged in the 19th century. However, the Sainte-Ursule chapel, the porter's house and part of the former library still bear witness to the site's important history.

Course outline

Our Volunteer Workcamp Leader on Historic Monuments course is part of the training program devised by Union REMPART to train future volunteer workcamp leaders in heritage restoration techniques and give them the tools they need to manage a volunteer workcamp. The training includes theory and practical sessions at Morimond Abbey, as well as site visits with a heritage architect.

Theoretical training

This course includes a wealth of theoretical training to help you understand the challenges of restoring France's built heritage, the environment of a volunteer workcamp, and your role as a leader. More specifically, the following topics will be covered during the course:

- The volunteer workcamp environment: workcamp associations; Union REMPART; public, private and associative partners; the social environment; etc.

- Heritage restoration in France: general knowledge about heritage; legislation and ethics relating to heritage and archaeology in France; restoration projects and the players involved; etc.

- The volunteer workcamp: setting up a workcamp project; documenting your workcamp; safety; etc.

- The coordinator: the role of the site coordinator.

These presentations will be complemented by meetings with key players in heritage restoration projects (DRAC, ABF, heritage architects and specialized restoration firms).

Technical training

During the two-week training course, you'll take part in workcamps at Morimond Abbey, perfecting your skills in traditional heritage restoration techniques such as stonemasonry and traditional masonry.

During the course, you'll take part in consolidation work on the ruins of the abbey's south doorway, demolished in the 20th century. A professional stonemason will accompany you throughout the course.

A stone-cutting technical course will be held at the same time as this training course, giving you the chance to share time on the site with volunteers committed to restoring our heritage!

Site visits

Lastly, you will accompany a heritage architect on visits to worksites that he supervises as part of his duties.
