The Tunpu village of Yunshan Tun

Organised by "Ruan Yisan Foundation"

From age 18

Take part in a cultural immersion in southern China as we restore a traditional village.

The heritage site

The site is located in Yunshan Tun village, in Anshun township, Guizhou province. Yunshan Tun is the best-preserved Tunpu village of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) in China.

Tunpu culture has its origins in the early Ming dynasty, when populations of Han ethnicity settled around the city of Anshun in a process of "military colonization and border defense" (屯田戍边). Subsequently, this culture evolved into a unique symbiotic relationship between enclosed military complexes ("tun") and fortified villages ("pu"). The traditional habitat of the Tunpu people adapts to the karst mountainous terrain of central Guizhou province with a structure of interlocking stone and wooden platforms (承台式石木穿排结构), reflecting their harmonious integration into the local topography.

The village of Yunshan Tun is therefore a tangible testimony to both a military and economic site dating back to the Ming period. According to inscriptions from the Yunjiu temple, its history dates back to the 24th year of the reign of the Ming emperor Hongwu (1391).

Planned work

The main aim of the Tunpu workcamp is to involve volunteers in the systematic restoration of ancient buildings around a residential courtyard under the supervision of local craftsmen. This includes clearing the site, assembling wooden structures and repairing stone walls.

Volunteers will be trained in traditional local craft practices.

Group living and accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in a village house close to the site, in shared rooms with bunk beds.

All meals are provided by the Ruan Yisan Foundation, with volunteers taking it in turns to help with household chores.

A full schedule of the work site is distributed to volunteers on their arrival at the site.

Leisure and other activities

Throughout the workcamp, volunteers are invited to take part in workshops on intangible cultural heritage, with visits to sites in the region, discovery of Dixi (the opera of Tunpu culture) and local music festivals. This enables volunteers to experience global cultural transmission practices.
