Temple of the Earth God of Guozhuang - Gaoping I

Organised by "Ruan Yisan Foundation"

From age 18

Help restore a traditional temple in northern China.

The heritage site

The Guozhuang Earth God Temple is located to the north-east of Guozhuang village, in Jianning township, part of Gaoping city. The site lies in the south of Shanxi province, between the Great Plain of North China and the middle reaches of the Yellow River.

Facing south, the temple covers an area of 467 square meters. The exact date of its foundation remains unknown, but the existing buildings reflect the architectural style of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). The temple complex comprises a courtyard with the main hall(zhengdian) and stage pavilion(xitai) situated on a central axis. Around the courtyard are several wings with auxiliary halls and a tower. The main hall is three bays wide and five rafters deep, topped by a single-panel hipped roof(danyin yingding). Two stone steles (one from the Song dynasty, the other from the Qing dynasty) are preserved in the temple.

Planned work

Volunteer activities will focus on masonry restoration, including brick and tile cleaning, as well as training in local carpentry techniques.

Volunteers will also be trained in the region's traditional craft practices.

Group living and accommodation

Volunteers will be provided with permanent accommodation in the village, close to the site.

All meals are provided by the Ruan Yisan Foundation, with volunteers taking turns for household chores.

A full schedule of the project is distributed to volunteers on arrival at the site.

Leisure and other activities

Volunteers will benefit from days off during the project. The local association can also organize cultural activities to discover the region. This allows volunteers to experience global heritage transmission practices.
