Serrada Viva

Organised by "Comunidad de Madrid"

From 18 to 30 years old

Take part in a cultural immersion workcamp in a small rural village north of Madrid.

The heritage site

The project takes place in the heart of the Sierra Norte de Madrid, one of the most natural and authentic areas of the Community of Madrid. Situated at an altitude of around 1,000 metres, the village of Serrada de la Fuente has fewer than 100 inhabitants, and is part of a rural environment rich in culture and nature.

The "Serrada Viva" project aims to bring heritage and environmental protection closer together in rural areas, helping to maintain and protect traditions, history and cultural identity.

Planned work

Over the fortnight of the workcamp, volunteers will help restore part of Serrada de la Fuente's heritage, through the conservation of combined dry-stone walls, as well as activities that demonstrate the potential and cultural richness of the rural world. Participants will be able to experience life in Serrada de la Fuente, interact with local residents and enjoy the international context of the workcamp.

There will be learning and collaboration on the following practical tasks:
  • Carry out maintenance and conservation work on the dry-stone walls of Serrada de la Fuente.

  • Organize and participate in cultural transmission activities between village elders and young people, including traditional practices such as herding and tending family vegetable gardens.

  • Participate in workshops and activities to learn traditional building techniques and the environmental protection associated with these techniques.

  • Program and participation in social theater and non-formal education activities.

Generally, working hours on the site take place in the morning, between 9am and 1:30pm, with free time and leisure activities in the afternoon:
