Ming Residence of Dong Quan village - Pingyao

Organised by "Ruan Yisan Foundation"

From age 18

Discover the heritage of Shanxi province with the restoration of a historic house.

The heritage site

The site is located in the village of Dong Quan (东泉镇), to the south-east of Ping Yao, an ancient city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was an important military and commercial center in Shanxi province, between the Great Plain of North China and the middle reaches of the Yellow River.

Dong Quan village lies at an important intersection of an old official road, and was a military defense post during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties.

To the north of the village is a military fort dating back to the Song dynasty (960-1279), bordered by a hundred-metre-deep ravine. The general layout of the village is in the shape of a "two-winged phoenix".

Planned work

The main aim of the workcamp is to involve volunteers in the restoration of the gate and surrounding walls of a Ming dynasty residential building. This includes site preparation, masonry work, cleaning and brick laying.

Volunteers will be trained in traditional local craft practices.

Group living and accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in the village near the site.

All meals are provided by the Ruan Yisan Foundation, with volunteers taking it in turns to help with household chores.

A full schedule of the project is distributed to volunteers on arrival at the site.

Leisure and other activities

Throughout the project, volunteers are invited to take part in workshops on local cultural heritage, with several visits organized (Pingyao). Cultural exchange workshops are also planned.

This enables volunteers to experience global cultural transmission practices.
