Masonry at Fort Saint-André

Take part in the construction of Fort Saint-Andre, restored by Vauban and overlooking the spa town of Salins-les-Bains, whose saltworks are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fort Saint-Andre may take its name from the church that was originally built on the site. The first fortifications date back to the 17th century, during the Franco-Spanish war between the Habsburgs, rulers of Franche-Comté, and the King of France. After the final French conquest in 1674, Louis XIV commissioned Vauban to rebuild the fort. He followed the plan drawn up by the Spanish a quarter of a century earlier, decisively reinforcing the fort's attack front. He also had new military buildings erected. On July 5, 1993, all the fortifications and buildings were listed as Historic Monuments.

Planned work

This tranche of restoration work will involve emergency consolidation of the unstable masonry of the fort's ramparts. The group of volunteers will be supervised by a historic monument company and housed in the fort.
