Island of Lazzaretto Nuovo - Ceramics - Venice

Organised by "Archeoclub d'Italia - Sede di Venezia"

from age 18

Take part in the maintenance of Venetian ceramics and discover the riches of the Isola del Lazzaretto.

The heritage site

The main objective of the project is to restore and revitalize the island of Lazzaretto Novo, which was abandoned by the military in 1975. In the Middle Ages, it was used to house sailors returning from the Mediterranean, who were suspected of carrying diseases.

Restoration work is being undertaken with a view to enhancing the cultural (archaeological, architectural, etc.) and environmental value of the surrounding area, in line with an eco-museum perspective.

Intense trade relations between Venice and Mediterranean countries over the centuries have guaranteed the city not only the circulation of goods, but also the transmission of knowledge and technologies. Ceramic ware is one of the main objects capable of recounting the characteristics of different eras. Venetian ceramics are therefore one of the most fascinating and relevant for understanding the role of Venetian art. It embodies the role of Venice as a pivotal city between East and West that has made the city so unique. Oriental influences can be seen in the decorative aspects and techniques employed. The artifacts of the Venetian "boccaleri" bear witness to the styles and motifs of art history: from the Byzantine style to typical Gothic decorations and 16th-century portraits.

Planned restoration work

Part One: History of Venetian ceramics and trade with the eastern Mediterranean, technologies; morphology and design; decoration.

Part Two: From excavation to workshop: the "graffito" technique; use of the potter's wheel; classification, cleaning and conservation of ceramic pieces.
