Dry stone in the village of Petrebišća

Organised by "Association 4 Grada Dragodid"

from age 18

Introduce yourself to traditional dry stone masonry high up in Croatia's Učka Nature Park.

The heritage site

The workcamp takes place in Petrebišća, an abandoned village in the Učka Nature Park, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Participants will walk for 2h30 from Mošćenička Draga, their luggage being transported by vehicle. Facilities are simple, with solar electricity, limited water and basic field toilets. Mobile signal is available at specific locations, offering a peaceful experience immersed in nature.

Petrebišća (Croatia) is an abandoned seasonal village made up of simple stone huts, situated on a plateau 750 m above sea level on the Učka mountain and surrounded by a beautiful forest, a deep canyon and a few peaks with views. Until a few decades ago, due to its fertile soil, it was used as summer pasture and agricultural area by the inhabitants of the coastal villages. A long history of human use is visible in this magnificent landscape. A few years ago, the Trebišća-Perun historical and mythological trail was created by the Učka Nature Park, adding key tourist importance to the village of Petrebišća. Since 2010, the Dragodid association, the municipality of Mošćenička Draga and the Učka Nature Park have been collaborating to organize summer workshops for students in Petrebišća. The aim is to pass on knowledge of traditional building techniques to generations of future young professionals. The reconstructed dry-stone buildings and landscape elements will be reused as shelters for hikers and as open spaces for various cultural events.

Planned restoration work

Participants will have the opportunity to learn the art of dry stone construction. They'll start by acquiring the basic rules and gradually improve their skills as they learn more challenging elements each day. They'll apply the skills they've learned to repairing dry-stone huts and other village objects, while working in small groups under the supervision of experienced experts.
In addition to dry-stone work, participants will have the opportunity to work with wood. Some attention will be devoted to gathering materials from the surrounding landscape: collecting stones, firewood, etc.
The program includes presentations and open discussions on the history, uses and other important features of traditional objects and other relevant topics.

Participants will follow an organized schedule that balances work and leisure; working hours approx. 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

Group living and accommodation

Accommodation is in open-air camping in the village of Petrebišća, located in the Učka Mountain Nature Park. Participants must bring their own camping equipment, although larger equipment such as tents can be provided on request. There is no indoor accommodation, and camp showers are limited to 1.5 liters of water per day. Communal toilets are basic field-type facilities.

3 meals a day will be prepared by the site manager. 8am, 12pm, 7pm. Vegetarians and vegans welcome.

Leisure and other activities

No specific skills are required to take part.
