Come and take part in the enhancement of the natural and archaeological heritage of a valley north of Madrid.
|
The project takes place on the Finca Los Batanes estate in the Paular valley, in the municipality of Rascafría, some 20 km from Segovia. This valley is a model of industrial development linked to the intensive use of hydraulic energy produced by its water mills. These activities have fostered local paper production. Don Quixote was first published with prints from Los Batanes.
The aim of the project is to make the most of the remains of this historic infrastructure.

Over the fortnight of the workcamp, participants will carry out a series of archaeological actions in different locations, with the aim of discovering archaeological remains based on previous research.
There will be learning and collaboration on the following practical tasks:
- Removal and cleaning of existing vegetation, both inside and outside, as well as on the perimeter of archaeological structures.
- Manual cleaning and scraping of construction elements (walls, floors, etc.), to eliminate harmful vegetation that can damage architectural elements. All archaeological finds will be collected, documented and stored for future study.
- Implementation of an archaeological methodology to excavate certain structures, rigorously recording the stratigraphy of deposits and building units that may be present in the subsoil. During this process, all archaeological material will be collected. An archaeological survey is also planned.
- Inventory of all archaeological materials collected, for subsequent research and storage at the Museo Arqueológico Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid (Regional Archaeological Museum of the Community of Madrid), in accordance with current regulations.
No previous experience is required to take part, as you will be working alongside an archaeologist and a historian.
