The Tolfa Mountains extend over some 77,000 hectares between the lower Viterbo area, the Cimini Mountains and the part of the coast beyond Civitavecchia that includes Santa Marinella, Santa Severa and Ladispoli.
The territory of the municipalities of Tolfa and Allumiere, covering 27,000 hectares, forms its central core.
The presence of plenty of water and a favorable climate have allowed the growth of enormous forests interrupted by vast plains; the mountain ridges are covered with dense woods and a wide variety of animals, plants and flowers find the ideal environment to create a balanced natural system.
You'll take part in archaeological digs at three incredible sites, dating from different eras, from prehistory to the Renaissance!
The first in the Roman Villa of Fontanaccia, built on a sanctuary dating from the Hellenistic period; the second in a votive deposit active from prehistory to the Renaissance; the third in a rural church from the Middle Ages. The latter two are located in Ripa Maiale. By taking part in the Gruppo Archeologico Romano research campaign, you can explore the pages of history. The Monti della Tolfa territory is rich in memories and traces dating back to prehistoric times. Enter the sacred area of Ripa Maiale with us, lose yourself in its caves, and help us to enhance and defend them against abandonment and oblivion. Immerse yourself in the evocative atmosphere of the Roman colony of Fontanaccia, where you'll find fragments brought down to the present day by the caresses of time. The research is organized in collaboration with the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Metropolitan Region of Rome, the Province of Viterbo and Southern Etruria.
