Archaeology at Ischia de Castro (2 weeks 1)

Organised by "Gruppo Archeologico Romano"

From age 18

Immerse yourself in the mille-feuille of history on the Via Amerina.

The heritage site

This area is the most important historical testimony to the presence of the Falisques (3rd century BC - 3rd century AD). The local association hopes to create an archaeological and nature park along the Via Amerina, bordered by a necropolis of rock tombs.

The Via Amerina archaeological site is concentrated on the hill of S. Giovenale, not far from the village of Corchiano, one of the most important ancient cities of the Faliscan people. S.Giovenale is a historic site carved out of the rock, first occupied by a village in the 4th-3rd centuries BC (Faliscan people), then, from the 3rd century BC (the Roman era) by food production activities.

Planned work

The digs organized by GAR have an educational vocation, and are aimed at non-professional archaeologists and supervised by professional archaeologists. The perfect opportunity to learn more about archaeological digs and their documentation. The objectives of the workcamp are: to learn how to dig using stratigraphic excavation techniques; to get to know the area; to learn the basics of Roman construction and ceramics. Please note that safety shoes and gloves are compulsory on these sites.

Group living and accommodation

We get up at 7:00-7:30 in the morning, have breakfast, and leave for the excavation site around 8:30 (on foot for 20 minutes or by car). We have lunch on site and dig until 4pm-5pm, depending on the day's program. Once back at the accommodation, theoretical courses or furniture management of your choice (cleaning, inventory, etc.). After lunch, 2/3 people return directly to the accommodation to start work on the furniture. Dinner is at 8.30pm, then free time for all. We may travel to Corchiano in the evenings, or to other towns.

Volunteers will be accommodated in single-sex dormitories. Meals will be prepared daily by a cook.

Leisure and other activities

If you're staying for more than a week, you'll be able to take advantage of an excursion during the weekend. Please note that, depending on what is decided by the host organization, you may be asked to pay for these activities (for example, museum admission at 10€).

Practical info

No specific skills are required to take part.

In the days following your pre-registration, the International Relations Department will contact you by e-mail to arrange a telephone conversation.

This will enable us to get to know you better and give you more details about the workcamp (organization, arrival arrangements, etc.).

You can ask us any questions you may have, and let us know what you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

You will then receive a roadmap summarizing all useful information about the site.
