Presentation

In the heart of the bocage, in a commune of 1000 inhabitants, come and bring the Cluis-Dessous fortress (12th-15th centuries) back to life. You'll be clearing and masonrying part of the perimeter wall of these imposing ruins, listed as a Monument Historique. You'll use local stone, NHL lime mortar and local red sand. The Bâtiments de France architect will be on hand to advise on the project, and INRAP archaeologists will carry out a study of the curtain wall before the work begins.

The fortress stands on a rocky outcrop on the banks of the river. The remains of the dwelling, chapel, motte keep, entrance châtelet and surrounding wall with protective towers can still be seen. It belongs to the commune. The Association de Sauvegarde des Sites de Cluis is in charge of the consolidation program. The fortress, which is open to the public, is the venue for cultural events such as theater festivals and regional archery competitions.
