Squared stone masonry in Montmédy

The project involves restoring the wall lining the "sentier des songes", which runs around the Charles-Quint Citadel in Montmédy (55). Under the supervision of heritage contractor Olivier Bertaut, the wall will be reassembled using squared stones. You'll discover the last remaining Charles V citadel. The ramparts overlook the lower town and the former county of Chiny.

Montmédy has long been a stronghold. Charles V had a powerful citadel built on the site of the old fortified castle, to protect the Spanish Low Countries from baroo-Lorraine advances. Louis XIV removed it in 1657 and had it consolidated by the genius of Vauban. Following the defeat of 1870, the Montmédy citadel benefited from the Séré de Rivières system, providing shelter from the might of the Prussians.

For 5 working days, you'll take part in the restoration of a squared stone wall. The work site is just a few minutes' walk from the accommodation and the citadel center, and 1/4 hour from the town center.

Accommodation is in the pigeonnier gête. Montmédy has an SNCF train station. Verdun can also be reached by TGV from Meuse TGV station + SNCF shuttle. The organizers can pick up volunteers in Verdun, or even in Sedan, also accessible by train.

Otherwise, access by road is easy from Paris or Metz/Strasbourg via the A4 freeway, exit Verdun-Voie Sacrée, Montmédy is 45 km away. The GPS location is crystal clear!

Free time will allow you to meet the locals over a good meal, discover the local treasures on guided tours, and go for pleasant walks and/or sporting activities. The Lux cinema is close to the accommodation and offers a wide range of art house and experimental films.
