Cuautla is a town of around 400,000 inhabitants in the state of Morelos, some 80km south of Mexico City. A land of sugarcane since Hernan Cortés imported it in the 16th century, the town was largely industrialized around this agricultural activity until the 19th century. The El Hospital aqueduct, nearly 2km long, brought water to the old hacienda de la Concepción, enabling a sugar mill to operate. Unfortunately, the aqueduct has been abandoned and is now in a state of disrepair.
Since 2019, the aqueduct of the El Hospital hacienda has been the subject of a restoration project carried out by AMVIAC in collaboration with local authorities, national and international civil associations, professional associations and many other players. More than 20 volunteer camps have been organized on this aqueduct, with the participation of at least 450 people.
The tasks carried out by the volunteers include architecture, civil engineering, history, biology, archaeology and carpentry, among others. The project aims to involve the local community in this enhancement and to generate tourism, economic, cultural and social development in the region.
