The medieval fortress of Couzan built on a rocky outcrop in the heart of the Monts du Forez dates back to Carolingian times. The owners, the Damascus, gave it its current form from the 11th century and thus made it a remarkable monument of feudal military architecture.

The largest castle in the region, it is made up of three enclosures around a 13th-century keep and a Romanesque chapel.

This chapel is dedicated to Saint Saturnin.

The ruins of the high walls, the citadel, the old dungeons, the harbor master's office, the farmyard or the Tour des Arrêts are still visible. The 11th century Tour des Arrêtes built in "fishbone" is the usual apparatus of Burgundian architecture in the 11th century,

The site has been listed as a historic monument since 1890.

In 1932, the Historical and Archaeological Society of Forez, La Diana became the owner and undertook major restoration works.
